Ma Rainey's Black Bottom: Interview with Charles S. Dutton

David Rothenberg interviews Charles S. Dutton about August Wilson's play "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" in which he now stars on Broadway as Levee the trumpeter. He won the Tony Award nomination for Best Actor. Dutton talks about his life in reform school, juvenile court and Maryland Prison. He speaks of how his passion and love of acting came to be.

Richard Lamparski interviews burlesque dancer and actress Sally Rand (1904 - 1979). Rand, nicknamed "Her Sexcellency," was most famous for her ostrich feather fan dance, which was credited with making the 1933 Chicago World's fair a financial success in the midst of the Great Depression.

Merkel is best known for her roles in the films Destry Rides Again (1939), The Bank Dick (1940), and Summer and Smoke (1961), for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. They discuss her long film and stage career.

Janis Ian and Nicky Seeger live at WBAI

Steve Rath presents folk musicians Janis Ian and Nicky Seeger in the WBAI studio. Ian and Seeger perform and speak about their music. They discuss Ian's career, which began at the age of 12; response to her first song, which Leonard Bernstein told the nation was a good song. A number of Ian's and Seeger's songs are played during the hour, and they do a couple live.
