Program Title:
Is the United States a true democracy? / Helen Caldicott.
PRA Archive #:
WZ0235
Description:

Talk by environmental and political activist Helen Caldicott on the international character of the environmental, political, and feminist movements. She begins by describing conditions in Australia, from the hole in the ozone, to the destruction of forests, to the impact of the nuclear accident at Chernobel. She goes on to discuss a Peace March and conference in Moscow which addressed the condition of women around the world. Next, she traces the rise of corporate power in the world, and how propaganda works to perpetuate that power. The influence of corporations is strongest in the United States, with the Reagan administration under direct control. The United States, she argues, is an economic feudal system, not a democracy, with the CIA as a private army on call to corporate interests. Cruelty is accepted in the United States, but its citizens must take back their country. She concludes with a call for a nuclear freeze, greater participation of women, and the need to express our anger.|IS THE UNITED STATES A TRUE DEMOCRACY? / Helen Caldicott. - Talk by environmental and political activist Helen Caldicott on the international character of environmental-political-feminist movement.
