Osmenda and Lopez, escaped political prisoners, discuss the repressive Philippine government.|FROM THE BARREL OF A GUN: MARTIAL LAW IN THE PHILIPPINES / Sergio Osmena and Eugenio Lopez| interviewed by Modesto Fernandez and Alan Snitow. - The martial law governement of President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines has been called one of the most repressive in the world by amnesty international and other human rights organizations. In the fall of 1977, two leading opponents of Marcos escaped from a prison in Manila and came to the United States. Just a few weeks after their escape, Sergio Osmena and Eugenio Lopez spoke with Modesto Fernandez and Alan Snitow of KPFA news in Berkeley. The interview took place shortly before the much publicized death sentences handed down to several other Marcos opponents, including former Senator Benigno Acquino, who is mentioned in the interview.
