Originally broadcast in 1951, Traume (Dreams) caused an outcry from listeners. The play consists of five thematically related dramas, each one occuring on a different continent. Dream 1 (Germany) is about a family incarcerated in a rolling boxcar for 40 years, only to reject the world outside when offered. Dream 2 (China) is about a young boy who is sacrificed to restore the health of an old man. Dream 3 (Australia) portrays fearful neighbors who drive a young family out of town for being happy. Dream 4 (Africa) follows two young men on safari who become disoriented by the jungle and lose all sense of purpose. Dream 5 (America) shows that amid prosperity, a young American couple discover that they are being hollowed out from within.
