Description:

This is twelfth in a series of thirteen programs produced by Florence Mischel from an extensive study conducted in the summer of 1963 at the Conference on law, jurisprudence, and the Bill of Rights, held at the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions in Santa Barbara. This program is also the third in a series of four talks on the public's interest and influence in government. This third of four seminars held to consider a theory of the first amendment is led by Joseph Tussman, professor of philosophy at the University of California at Berkeley. Participating in the discussion are Center chairman Robert M. Hutchins, Alexander Meiklejohn, former president of Amherst College, Harry Calvin, Jr. of the University of Chicago Law School, Judge Edwin Dunaway, former Supreme Court Justice of the state of Arkansas, and staff members Richard Lichtman, W. H. Ferry, Harry Ashmore, Harvey Wheeler, and William Gorman. Hallock Hoffman introduces the program. The Center was established by the Fund for the Republic to study whether and how a free and just society may be maintained under the strikingly new political, social, economic, and technological conditions of the twentieth century.
