Report on the Fifth International Conference on AIDS, where 12,000 doctors, researchers, nurses and others from 87 countries address the many challenges posed by AIDS. The issues include: the worldwide scientific challenge, its social implications, health care, policy making, and the role of AIDS activists in shaping the response to the epidemic.

Two member of the Australian-based Association for Research and Environmental Aid (AREA), Jones and Wunder discuss their work in Gonepani, Nepal, a small Himalayan village.
