Description:

THIS WAY OUT the international gay & lesbian radio magazine Program #703, distributed 09/17/01: (hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle) (Program I.D. #02-F72-00038) Gay heroes & victims of the terrorist assault on America are remembered; Two leading U.S. televangelists blame the attacks on God's wrath against progress, and two prominent gay men of faith respond; Gay blood ban dampens disaster donation efforts, Brighton & Hove follow London's partner registry lead, and other global GLBT news; plus pop jazz, burlesque blues & Southern grit from the "AudioFile"* In "NewsWrap": An extensive report about some of the gay heroes and victims of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon... gay men continue to be prevented from giving blood, despite the crisis... open lesbian Massachusetts state Senator Cheryl Jacques loses her bid for the Democratic nomination for a seat in the U.S. Congress, but voters retain openly-gay 4-term Tempe, Arizona Republican Mayor Neil Giuliano by a margin of over 2-to-1 in what many considered to be a homophobia-inspired recall election... a bill to add significant legal benefits to an otherwise ceremonial domestic partner registry in California passes both legislative bodies and goes to Governor Gray Davis, whose signature is probable but not certain... in Britain, the City Council of Brighton & Hove follow London's lead to establish partnership registries... the European Union considers adding those persecuted on the basis of sexual orientation or gender to the formal definition of "refugee" for asylum consideration purposes... and other GLBT news from around the world [written by CINDY FRIEDMAN and anchored by BRIAN NUNES & CINDY FRIEDMAN].(about 9:30) * "Irresponsible", "loathsome", "beyond contempt"... those were just some of the words used to describe the remarks of two icons of the religious right, PAT ROBERTSON and JERRY FALWELL, in response to the disastrous September 11th terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C. On the Christian Broadcasting Network's "700 Club", the pair claimed that the attacks occurred due to God's refusal to protect the U.S. because of the country's "abortionists, feminists, and gays and lesbians". In this report by This Way Out's LUCIA CHAPPELLE, you'll hear the comments in question, and reaction from two other men of faith: REVEREND TROY PERRY, founder and moderator of the predominantly gay and lesbian Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches, and REVEREND MEL WHITE of the devoutly nonviolent queer-affirming group Soulforce.(about 10:00)* The third solo release by "pop jazz" chanteuse SUEDE ("On The Day We Met"), the debuting gritty Southern-rooted storytelling of MARCUS HUTCHESON ("Right Where I Am"), and the fifth and latest burlesque-tinged blues and swing stylings of CANDYE KANE ("I'm The Toughest Girl Alive") constitute the featured CD's in this month's "AUDIOFILE" (with brief comments by each artist, hosted by CHRIS WILSON & JD DOYLE, and written & produced with CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM).(about 6:30)
