Part One:

SNCC Mississippi Field Secretary Mathew Jones describes in 1964 his experiences that would evolve to his participation in the Mississippi Freedom Summer. He begins by recounting his time as a student in 1960 at the Tennessee State University in Nashville when the Sit-In Movement began.  (24 minutes, from AZ1397a)

Recorded reports on the Mississippi Voter Registration are done by Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). SCOPE, Summer Community Organization and Political Education, consists of students from UCLA who are working on voter registration in Bib County, GA. (27 minutes, from AZ1397b)

 

Governor Ross Barnett

 

This recording features excerpts of Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett condemning the actions of voter registration activists who have started a movement to register disenfranchised Black voters traditionally excluded from voting in Mississippi. Governor Barnett uses the same language used today to dismiss efforts to make improvements in American society. Memorial service for James Chaney

 

Actuality of a service for a slain civil rights worker, James Chaney, held in his home town in Meridian, Mississippi on August 7, 1964.
