NEWS HEADLINES AMERICAN PHARAOH: THE DALEY EMPIRE IN CHICAGO Al Gore last week named Commerce Secretary William Daley his new campaign chairman. Daley replaces Tony Coelho, the former California congressman who said he was stepping down because of a potentially debilitating medical condition. William Daley is the son of the late Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley and brother of the current mayor, Richard M. Daley. He is a trusted adviser of President Clinton and played the lead role in winning approval of the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1993; in hosting the 1996 Democratic National Convention in Chicago; and in pushing through legislation to normalize trade relations with China this year. Today we are going to spend the hour looking at the Daley Empire in Chicago. An empire started by the late Richard Daley. Outside of Chicago, he is probably most well known for presiding over the brutal crackdown on anti-war demonstrators at the 1968 Democratic Convention. But he also played a significant role in the election of JFK and in opposing Martin Luther King's attempt to take the civil rights movement North with Chicago as the first stop. He is a senior writer for the Nation section of Time magazine, where he covers law and politics. He has also written for Chicago magazine, the Chicago Tribune and Harvard Law Review. Elizabeth Taylor, co-author of "American Pharaoh." She was a correspondent for Time in New York and Chicago for more than a decade. She is now Literary Editor and Sunday Magazine Editor of the Chicago Tribune. Jim Fuerst, former Director of Research for the Chicago Housing Authority from 1943 to 1952. He has been a Professor of Social Welfare Policy at Loyola University for 25 years. Don Rose, political consultant, was Dr. Martin Luther King's press secretary for the Chicago campaign from 1965 to 1967. He was also an organizer for the National Mobilization Committee Against the War in Vietnam.
