NEWS HEADLINES ISLAMIC JIHAD CLAIMS RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANOTHER SUICIDE BOMBING, THIS TIME IN HAIFA AS THE ISRAELI GOVERNMENT SEIZES ORIENT HOUSE, THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY AND A SYMBOL OF INTERNATIONAL DIPLOMACY A Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up at a crowded caf' in the northern port city of Haifa yesterday, wounding 15 and killing the bomber, just three days after a similar attack in Jerusalem killed 16 people. The bombing comes as Israeli troops continued their occupation of the Orient House and other Palestinian Authority buildings, leading thousands to protest what even US officials called a dangerous escalation of the tensions in Israel and the occupied territories. Among the protestors are US and European citizens who have come to the occupied territories to act as human shields. In Hebron, a seven year old Palestinian girl also died yesterday of head wounds she sustained when she was shot by Israeli soldiers during a gun fight with a group of Palestinians. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon announced that he would allow Foreign Minister Shimon Peres to meet with Palestinian leaders to discuss a possible ceasefire, but declared that the PA would no longer be allowed to operate in Jerusalem. Guests: Brian Wood, activist with the Center for Rapprochement in Bethlehem, a Palestinian center for nonviolence which has coordinated the arrival of US and European citizens acting as human shields. Phyllis Bennis, Fellow with the Institute for Policy Studies and author of Calling the Shots: How Washington Dominates Today's UN. Azmi Bashara, Palestinian Arab and member of the Israeli Knessett. Story: THE SECRET BEHIND THE SANCTIONS: HOW THE US INTENTIONALLY DESTROYED IRAQ'S WATER SUPPLY Newly declassified documents have been found which reveal that US officials were aware as early as 1991 of the impact that US bombing and sanctions would have on Iraq's water supply. The documents predicted that preventing Iraq from importing desperately needed chlorine and spare parts would result in epidemic disease. The new documents come more than ten years after the imposition of US-backed sanctions against Iraq which have killed more than a million people. Guest: Thomas Nagy, Nagy is author of "The Secret Behind the Sanctions: How the U.S. Intentionally Destroyed Iraq's Water Supply," the just-published cover story in the September issue of The Progressive. He is associate professor of expert systems at George Washington University. He said the Administration would only allow funding for already existing lines of stem cells and said that adequate numbers of such lines already existed, a claim that was immediately denied by many stem cell researchers. Without federal funding there is little federal regulation. Lost in the media's discussion of the Bush decision is the question of who will profit from the lack of government regulation on stem cell research. Guest: Ruth Hubbard, Professor emeritus of biology at Harvard University and author of Exploding the Gene Myth, Hubbard is on the board of the Council for Responsible Genetics.
