That classic American song was written by Yip Harburg, who was blacklisted during the McCarthy Era. During his career as a songwriter and a screenwriter, Harburg used his music to express anti-racist, anti-corporate and proworker messages. He's best known for co-writing the music from the film, The Wizard of Oz, but he also had had two major hits on Broadway: "Bloomer Girls", about the suffrage movement and "Finian's Rainbow", which was about race and class. It's the 100th anniversary of his birth and on the next Democracy Now: a tribute to Yip Harburg, father, composer and social activist. - Originally broadcast on December 30, 1996.
