A performance of Orazio Vecchi's late 16th-century madrigal opera L'Amfiparnaso (1597) by a cappella vocal ensemble The Western Wind. Cast includes Janet Steele and Janet Sullivan, sopranos; William Zukof, counter-tenor; William Lyon Lee, tenor; Elliot Levine; bass. This reel contains the first half of the opera and an intermission. During the intermission, WBAI's Eric Salzman interviews Steven Urkowitz, director, and singer-musicologist Larry Bennett about the history of madrigal comedy, Vecchi's role in its development, and the difficulties of staging a madrigal comedy for radio. Produced and recorded during a live Free Music Store broadcast on November 11, 1971, by WBAI's Music Department.
