CONTENT: Michael Harrington suggests why his book "Poverty in America" is still successful two years after its' publication, his early experiences living and working with the poor, his views about the culture of poverty, and his desire to work with government agencies to battle poverty. Harrington goes on to examine the importance of full employment, poverty programs in Appalachia, and European impressions of American poverty. There are ways for the poor to improve themselves, he continues, with labor unions as a organizing force for the unemployed and poor to become empowered. He concludes by explaining why the poor are still "invisible" to most Americans, and how President Johnson's War on Poverty is changing that fact.
