Documentary from interviews with rural Southern midwives Melissa Newll, Mildred Minix, Thelma Osborne, Jackie Rooke, and Claudia Senser, which examines both traditional and contemporary midwivery. Two of those interviewed are "lay" midwives, trained through mentorship and hands-on experience. They practice traditional methods of healing used by pioneer mountain women. The other three are CNM's (Certified Nurse Midwives) who bridge the gap beween backwoods medicine and modern practices.
