Journalist Norman Solomon, co-author of Unreliable Sources: A Guide to Detecting Bias in News Media, discusses how corporate controlled mass media wants people to be passive rather than active, and thus become good consumers who will accomodate themselves to the status quo. News, he continues, encourages people to discount their feellings by destroying the language and mystifying social reality. He goes on to examine Alice Miller's analysis of dysfunctional authoritarian families which covers up the reality of abusive family relations. He warns that we are all becoming numb to both family and social realities.
