Talk by former CIA agent Philip Agee in which he traces the development of the National Security States and its influence upon United States foreign and domestic policies.
r.1. Agee begins by comparing U.S. intervention and exploitation in Latin America with that of Spain in the 15th and 16th centuries, and how his experiences in the region lead to leaving the Agency. He has returned to the U.S. after 17 years of exhile in order to expose the workings of the U.S. government. The CIA has outgrown its original function as information gatherers to become shapers of foreign policy. Agee then provides a chronology of major CIA activites since World War II which have lead to its increased influence and control of foreign affairs (58 min.) -- r.2. Agee continues his presentation by suggesting that, according to the CIA, the Third World has become the primary threat the U.S. interests. The goal of the Agency is to maintain the United States as the only "super power" in the world. This goal includes defeating democratic movements in Latin America and the Caribbean and the continued buildup of American military forces. Agee concludes with a discussion of how the economic elite began taking over the country during the Constitutional Convention, in which the principles of the Declaration of Independence were replaced by the needs of the ruling class (24 min.).
