Description:

Fred Cody interviews American writer J.S. Holliday, also known as Jim Holliday, about his book The World Rushed In: The California Gold Rush Experience. Holliday describes how his three decade long project started with the diaries of William Swain, which he was introduced to by book dealer Ed Eberstadt. Swain was an American from Youngstown, New York who traveled to California during the Gold Rush, and returned to New York after seven months. Holliday also included correspondence between Swain and his brother and wife in his book. Cody and Holliday talk about the impact of the Gold Rush as a national experience on the United States and how it shaped our perceptions of California for the future.
