ON THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM: New "AudioFile" music by 2 lesbian legends and 4 Minnesota 40-somethings; Canadian couples continue their courtroom quest for marriage equality; Israeli President holds historic meeting with queer activists, Taiwan gay candidates test the electoral waters, gay writer takes top spot in Dutch political protest party, rights repeal effort officially fails in Maryland, and other global GLBT news * In NewsWrap: Israeli President Moshe Katsav holds an historic meeting with a delegation of gays, lesbians and transgenders... Taiwan's parliamentary elections feature two openly-gay candidates for the first time, while openly-gay Pim Fortuyn is overwhelmingly elected to lead Leefbaar Nederland, a relatively-new Dutch reform political party, and open lesbian Cathy Woolard becomes President of the Atlanta, Georgia City Council in a city-wide run-off election... the state of Maryland's sexual orientation anti-discrimination law finally takes effect after a protracted repeal attempt officially fails... and other GLBT news from Australia, Latvia, Canada, Sweden, the Caribbean, and Belgium [written by CINDY FRIEDMAN and anchored by JON BEAUPRE and CINDY FRIEDMAN].(about 10:00) * It's been about two months since the Supreme Court of British Columbia, Canada ruled against eight lesbian and gay couples who were seeking to overturn their country's ban on same gender marriage. While the participants in that case wait for word on their appeal, marriage rights cases in two other Canadian provinces went to court last month. In Ontario, ten couples are seeking the right to marry, with two of them represented by the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto. In Quebec, the case is brought by a single couple of long-time activists from Montreal. In this report from HEATHER KITCHING ["Queer FM"/CITR-Vancouver], several of the plaintiffs and their attorneys describe the different approaches in their cases.(about 8:30)* The new words and music in this month's "AudioFile" all come from lesbians in their middle ages -- one from a new band that plays up its over-40 status (4D-YKES' "Hot Flash"), and two from singers the community has treasured since they were part of the younger set (HOLLY NEAR's "Edge" and CRIS WILLIAMSON's "Ashes") [hosted by CHRIS WILSON & J.D. DOYLE and written & produced with CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM].(about 7:00)
