Description:

EQUITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE IN THE 1990's / Manning Marable. - Talk by Manning Marable, Director of the Institute for African-American Studies, before the Committee of Correspondence. He starts by evaluating the contemporary view of the 'victory' of Capitalism over Socialism, contending that there still exist a huge gap between the haves and the have nots| a situation which guarentees class struggle. Mr. Marable evaluates the relations of race and class, the growing prison crisis, problems with education and housing, and the creation of a huge homeless population. There must be a redefinition of the social and political problems facing our country, he contends, but we are confronted with a corporate-dominated economic system. A coalition for social change must be built, he concludes, so that the movement can capture the hearts and minds of the masses. - RECORDED: Los Angeles, 10 July 1993. BROADCAST: KPFK, 14 July 1993.
