Talk by Luis Valdez, artistic director and founder of the El Teatro Campesino, the creator of Zoot Suit, and director of La Bamba (a film about the list of Ritchie Valens). He begins by noting how the entire 20th century provides a context for evaluating Chicano history. He presents popular views of Sleepy Lagoon and the Zoot Suit revolution, and his quest to find his personal as well as cultural history. He recounts personal experiences as a student, his education and opportunities in the theater, meeting Cesar Chavez and becoming involved in the struggle, and meeting Alice McGrath and Taylor Hackford. Valdez goes on to discuss the problems of casting Frieda Kahlo, the 20th century as the century of Rigoberta Menchu, and the importance of understanding one's own history to be effective. He concludes with a call for world peace and unity.|HOW THE LABOR MOVEMENT HAS EFFECTED THE CHICANO COMMUNITY / Luis Valdez. - Talk by Luis Valdez, artistic director and founder of the El Teatro Campesino, the creator of Zoot Suit, and director of La Bamba (a film about the list of Ritchie Valens).
