Description:

Sabino Virgo speaks about the high cost of accepting the illusions presented about the United States. She cites the acquital of the police who beat Rodney King, and the subsequent violence, as proof that reality does not fit the image offered by the male dominated power elite. Even faced with painful realities of African-American suffering, the media really only focused upon the threat to the white community. The media coverage of the 1992 Presidential campaign, Virgo continues, is another example of media manipulation. H. Ross Perot was portrayed as a populist while spending $100 mllion on his campaign -- which is only 10 days interest on his wealth. Only the Clinton-Bush mud slinging was covered, but no one addressed the problems inherent in the United States: homelessness, teenage pregnancy, and increased murder rates. The misdirected media ignores the Savings and Loan crisis while covering the Woody Allen-Mia Farrow divorce. Ms. Virgo concludes with a call for a true progressive movement, one which would involve average Americans in issues which really effect them. One example of this process is the formation of Progressive Unity Councils across the country.|THE MAGIC KINGDOM / Sabina Virgo. - Sabino Virgo speaks about the high cost of accepting the illusions presented about the United States.
