He reviews the history and politics of the region since World War II, the Sukarno regime and the 1965 coup which began the massacre of nearly 1 million communists| the subsequent repression, including 500,000 detained and imprisoned. His goal is to secure the release of 2,000 prisoners still held for trial, and 100,000 held illegally without trial. He focusses upon two issues: stoping the transport of prisoners to the remote Island of Buru, and the release of women and children prisoners.
