Black on Black homocice : a mental health crisis / A. Lynch.
Talk by Dr. A. Lynch about the realties of violence within the African-American community. He begins with a statistical portrait of Black male life expectency, where 1 in 20 New York City Black males will be murdered. Half of the prisoners are Black youths charged with violent crimes. He equates the period 1976-2000 as the Second Black Reconstruction, with the judicial system focused upon punishing African-Americans. The Vietnam War was particularly devestating to Black men, for they came back to unemployment of social stigma because of their participation. Alcholism, crime, and drugs have grown into an underground economy dominated by gangs. Fully 1/3 of all Black families now live in poverty. The typical reaction is to lash out against a hopeless situation, leading to increased domestic violence. Dr. Lynch concludes by a call for major reforms in the prison system, police forces, and the need for fostering hope for change.|BLACK ON BLACK HOMOCIDE : A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS / A. Lynch.
