Yes, you read that right! HER name was Alice Guy Blache and she wasn’t just the first women director, she was the first motion picture DIRECTOR. This is an excellent documentary on the history of women filmmakers including Guy Blache, Anita Loos (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes), Mae West, and Nazi propoganda filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl. This recording is being preserved long term through the UC Berkeley library and through funding from the National Historica Publications and Records Commission. You can view the record here: http://pacificaradioarchives.org/recording/bc1880 and listen to the recording at UC Berkeley here: http://pacificaradioarchives.org/recording/bc1880.
Doing research I came across this trailer for a documentary about Guy Blache currently in production! http://vimeo.com/70380930
Enjoy!
