Description:
Talk on how the Bill of Rights relates to freedom of the press.|FREEDOM AND THE PRESS / Herbert Block. - Talk by Herbert Block on the life and work of Elmer Davis. Block compares Davis to John F. Kennedy, and then goes on to examine the electoral process in the United States. Low voter turnout, he argues, is the result of: 1) restrictions and intimidation at the State level| 2) unfair apportionment, overrepresenting rural areas| 3) inability of elected representatives to vote in support of their constitutents. It is up to the press, he continues, to battle the obstacles to democracy by uncovering the realities of government operations, thus bringing the dishonesty to light. - BROADCAST: WBAI, 22 Feb. 1964.
