This week on From the Vault we broadcast a 1958 lecture by preeminent 1950's Harvard sociologist and educator David Riesman, the first in the series Riesman gave called The American Future. Tocqueville's Vision, as this lecture is known, explores 19th century French diplomat and political scientist Alexis de Tocqueville's observations on equality and individualism in America, as published in his Democracy in America (1835) - arguably one of the most influential books of the that century.
