Description:
Hoyt Fuller of the Negro Digest, Louise Meriwether of the Los Angeles Sentinel, Bettye Hughes of the San Francisco Sun Reporter, and Norm McGhee discuss Black publishers and publishing in a panel moderated by Al Silbowitz. This panel may have been associated with "The Negro writer in the United States" conference, sponsored by the University of California at Berkeley, convened on the grounds of Asilomar State Park from August 5-9, 1964.
pbcoreAnnotation:
Reference: Negro Digest, March 1965, pp. 50 and 81, which lists the conference as "upcoming" so the broadcast date of 1964 seems erroneous.
HRL note, 2014-04-09: I can't find any clues that would suggest this occurred at the "Negro Writer's Vision of America" conference in New York, as the previous cataloger suggested with the above reference, since we can't confirm from the tape box, folios, or research at this time. In fact, we can't even confirm that this discussion was taped at a conference. From the sound quality, it sounds like it was recorded in-studio. From all information presented, I would assume that if this recording were associated with any conference, it would be "The Negro writer in the United States" conference in Asilomar, August 5-9, 1964.
"The Negro Writer's Vision of America" conference in New York, co-sponsored by The New School for Social Research and The Harlem Writers Guild, April 23-25, 1965. Title and date of conference reference from Negro Digest, April 1965, p.83.
