Description:
Reporters from the national and international news media talk with Mr. Newton, leader of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, about his personal and political philosophy. Also interviewed is the Black Panther Party attorney Charles R. Garry, Newton's sister and Newton's fiancee, unnamed for their personal safety. Recorded March 7, 1968 in a detention cell at the Alameda County Courthouse. Also The program was produced and narrated by Colin Edwards.
pbcoreAnnotation:
Restricted distribution rights. At the end of the recording, Edwards makes this statement: The foregoing interview is copyright 1968 by the Huey P. Newton Defense Fund, without whose specific consent, no reproduction or publication of Mr. Newton's remarks can be made.
The Bay Area Black Panther Party Collection, 1963-2000 held by UC Berkeley was gathered by Richard Aoki, a founding member of the Bay Area chapter and the only Asian American to hold a formal leadership position as Field Marshall. The UC Berkeley collection states in several places that use of the collection is unrestricted. Because of this designation, I would determine that the Huey Newton Defense Fund is no longer in existence, and that we are permitted to share this recording with the American Archive of Public Broadcasting.
