THIS WAY OUT the international gay & lesbian radio magazine Program #705 distributed 10/1/01: (hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle) (Program I.D. #02-F72-00040 : Opening Teases/Theme Music/Intro Continuity 1:10 SEGMENT #1 NewsWrap: The Finnish parliament approves registered partnerships for gay & lesbian couples, with many of the rights of legal marriage -- but without parental rights -- while Spain's ruling Partido Popular party scuttles similar partnership measures there, while the Pretoria High Court issues two rulings in support of same-gender couples and their children in South Africa; the U.S. House of Representatives votes to lift the ban on Washington DC implementing its domestic partners registry, but prohibits the payment of over $100,000 awarded by the DC Human Rights Commission to two gay men who were rejected by the Boy Scouts of America; the Bush administration's recently-announced "stop loss" policy suspending most administrative discharges in order to keep personnel available for combat has thus far specifically required continued discharges of gays & lesbians for violations of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", as the U.S. Air Force, the first service branch to activate the "stop loss" policy, announced this week; Australian activists condemn moves in Tasmania to expand religious exemptions in the state's Anti-Discrimination Act, and the federal government's denial of a visa to British activist Peter Tatchell, who'd intended to make a citizen's arrest of homophobic Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe when he visits Brisbane; Canada's broadcasting regulator orders two major cable TV carriers, Shaw and Star Choice, to end their differential treatment of North America's first gay & lesbian TV channel, PrideVision; and, contrary to her tongue-in-cheek preference, Ellen DeGeneres' new CBS-TV sitcom is not called "The Cindy Show" [written by CINDY FRIEDMAN, with thanks to GRAHAM UNDERHILL, JASON LIN, BRIAN NUNES, CHRIS AMBIDGE, REX WOCKNER and GREG GORDON, and anchored by JON BEAUPRE & CINDY FRIEDMAN]. 10:05 SEGMENT #2 "Last Refuge of Scoundrels" billboard [:10] + Gay, lesbian, bi and trans activists are signing on early to a resurgent U.S. anti-war, anti-racism movement. But as This Way Out's LUCIA CHAPPELLE discovered at a September 29th demonstration attended by about 2,500 at the Westside Federal Building in Los Angeles, while some were "inspired" by Rev. Jerry Falwell's widely publicized assertion that progressive achievements like gay & lesbian civil rights set the stage for the September 11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, that wasn't the only motivating factor (with comments by queer organizers and participants, including JOE DELAPLAINE of the Stonewall Initiative for Equal Rights and WEST HOLLYWOOD MAYOR STEVE MARTIN) [8:05] . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8:15 SEGMENT #3 - "TWO" I.D. by comic actor TERRY SWEENEY (as "Nancy Reagan") [:15] + PAUL LUSSIER has put the "revolution" back into the American Revolution with his new novel, "LAST REFUGE OF SCOUNDRELS" (Warner Books), which tells the story of an unsung army of ordinary Americans who sought freedom from poverty and social inequalities and, rather than most of the self-interested "Founding Fathers", should be honored as the real heroes of the U.S. War for Independence. Openly-gay television producer Lussier spent nearly a decade researching his book, which among other things reveals that George Washington's chief strategist was a cross-dressing prostitute. As the novelist explains in this first of a two-part conversation with This Way Out's RITA GONZALEZ, his "fiction" is just as true as the traditional history of the Revolutionary War that every American has learned in school (intro music from "Revolution" by THE BEATLES) [7:30] .7:45[concludes next week] Closing Continuity/Credits.1:30 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME. 28:45
