Description:

A benefit performance or the Indians on Alcatraz Island was held December 12, 1969 in Stanford University's Memorial Chapel. The Chapel was crowded with supporters of the Alcatraz Project who had come to hear Malvina Reynolds and Buffy St. Marie sing for a cause to which both were deeply committed. The evening's moderator was Adam Nordwall (now Adam Fortunate Eagle) of the Chippewa tribe. Nordwall introduces Shirley Keith of the Winnebago tribe (tape A), then Malvina Reynolds (tape B), then Buffy St. Marie (tapes C and D). Also heard on the final tape are Richard Oaks of Alcatraz; Nordwall reading a proclamation from the Indians on Alcatraz; and closing remarks from Nordwall. Denny Smithson of KPFA's public affairs department introduces the program. Originally broadcast during KPFA's open hour, December 12, 1969.
