Keynote speech by Seymour Hersh, the Pulitzer Prize winning journalist who broke the My Lai Massacre story and has authored several books, including "The Price of Power" and "The Sampson Option." Hersh speaks about the importance of moral force in fostering change, citing the anti-Vietnam War protest movement as evidence. He warns of the role of contemporary press as a propaganda tool, particularly how it was manipulated during the Gulf War. The misrepresentation of Middle Eastern affairs is evident in Ronald Reagan's portrayal of the Iran-Contra affair, but stretches back into the 1960's when the United States could have prevented Israel from developing nuclear weapons. It is up to United States citizens to criticize the government, holding it up to a higher standard that we have come to expect.
